What is Nashville Mojo?

the small picture - The Mojo is a free web site for Nashville natives and our neighbors. The site helps you get connected with what’s going on in the city: free ads, personal profiles, interest groups, classifieds, and local calendar events. We also have a city directory with some interesting venues suggested by locals, and we have an online forum so we can talk with one another.

the big picture - We believe in community, and Mojo is all about our local community: making friends and connections, learning about local artists and venues, and promoting our businesses and interests.

We also believe...

• that the Internet (and today's world in general) is sorely lacking civility and is far too impersonal.
• that suburbs have gone a long way towards destroying community: they're too insulating and not conducive to making new friends, they're often not friendly to walkers, and they force most residents to drive everywhere. Think about the death of the front porch in favor of the backyard...
• that central air and coffee are proof positive that there is a God in heaven.
• local musicians and artists should be supported.
• web sites with blinking graphics and unsolicited pop-ups are really, really annoying.
• SPAM is from the devil and someone should be going to hell. Whenever you post your email address on Mojo (i.e. calendar events, classifieds, etc.) we disguise it in JavaScript to prevent automated address collecting programs ('bots') from capturing it. Post away, and no worries. We should all be safe.

The Tao of Mojo

The idea of a local 'online' community is nothing new, but it's an idea that has certainly been lost in many places.

Mojo is our effort to bring real, local community to the web. The first 'beta' version of Mojo was actually built in 2000, but we didn't have the time to fully commit to the idea until 2002. We've been working at it non-stop since then. Although it sounds nutty, there are literally tens of thousands of hours of concept, programming, revisions and more that went into the site you're now looking at, not to mention a stupid amount of money. It has been and it continues to be our labor of love, and we hope you can use it and enjoy it. Please keep your hands and feet inside at all times, and enjoy your ride! So, the only question that remains is…

Are you local?

We can't be a success without your help, and you can help by participating. First and foremost, tell us who you are! Post a local profile. Being shy on Mojo is not a virtue, and it will get you nowhere. Once you've created a profile, it's time to really dig in deeper. Post and promote your events in the calendar, create a group, chat with others, post classifieds, join in the forum discussions, and please tell your friends and co-workers about us.

We're also looking for original submissions to the site: editorials, fiction, news articles, graphics and cartoons. If you have an idea, share it with us; we'd love to hear from you!
